THRIFT STORE TIPS - MUSKA JAHAN

11 TOP THRIFT STORE TIPS FOR HIJABIS

The thrift store is the PERFECT place for hijabis and Muslimahs to find modest clothing! In many cases, the clothes for sale are from a time period when modesty was more mainstream. I personally making trips to the thrift store with my mother and sister because I find lots of beautiful and cheap dresses and jackets.

Here are some quick thrift store tips:

1.) Don’t Be Overwhelmed

When you walk into a thrift store you will probably see rows and rows of junky, old, and abandoned clothing. If this is your first time, the first question you will ask yourself is: “Why am I here?”

But you will not have that situation happen to you because I will prepare you! So fear not… 😀

2.) Know What You Are Looking For

Ex. If you are looking for a new pair of boots, make a beeline to the shoe section. This sounds like common sense, but if you have been to thrift stores, then you know how cluttered and distracting they can be. This tip will make sure that you don’t waste time if you came to look for a specific item.

Here is a list of items that hijabis can find useful in each shopping category:

Accessories: Scarves for hijabs

– Jewelry

– Belts to wear with dresses and skirts.

Dresses

– Dresses that can be tailored or cut up to become skirts.

Shirts

– Cute tops to wear with skirts and pants.

Jackets/Sweaters

– Jackets that can be tailored

– Sweaters that can be cut to become arm socks

3.) Keep an Open Mind

There are so many experiences where I’ve had an amazing find catch my eye. If something stands out to you from far away, go for it and you might be surprised at what treasures you can find.

4.) Keep It Simple

Please bring a wristlet wallet and leave the heavy purse at home. In addition, wear clothing that is easy to put on and take off. This will make the shopping experience run more smoothly so you won’t get tired.

5.) Shop Where the Rich People Live!

You have probably heard this already, but it is a very good tip to keep in mind. Rich people will donate their clothing to local thrift stores, and if you are lucky you might find a gem or two with the tags still attached.

6.) Have a Plan for Your Thrifted Clothing Post-Purchase

If the clothing you purchase needs to modernized, think about the time, materials, and cost for alterations and embellishments.  If you need some inspiration, try Pinterest or take a look at the DIY section of this blog!

7.) Go By Yourself, or with Close Friends & Family

If you are a loner by nature and you know what you like, that’s awesome. However, if you are a social shopper and/or need approval from someone else, go with someone that you trust and is familiar with the thrift shopping scene.

8.) Create a Plan of Attack

Find out what thrift store(s) you would like to go to and map it out. This way, you can save time with driving routes and be more efficient. I personally like to go to multiple locations if I am trying to get a whole new wardrobe.

9.) Set a Budget

Another obvious tip, but sometimes this thing happens…….. when you want to buy everything……. but you shouldn’t………but you do 😀 .

10.) Do Your Research

Find out whether your thrift stores have discounts or sales! Some of them have regular opportunities and even membership cards so take advantage of them when you can.

11.) Use a Cart

Carts make the shopping experience easier.

If I am buying multiple items, the cart is my hero. Even if I’m on the fence about a piece of clothing, I always put it in the cart. That way, if I put a gorgeous dress back on the rack and realize my mistake later, I won’t have to cry myself to sleep when someone else purchases it. Also, I can usually make better purchasing decisions right before I get to the register when I have to pull my wallet out.
