HOW TO SHOP FOR MODEST CLOTHING: SILHOUETTES PART 1
Asalamualaikum! In the first part of the How to Shop for Modest Clothing Series, I share some examples of modest dress silhouettes that work well with any modest woman’s wardrobe. By having these key pieces, you are sure to have a flexible closet that will allow you to dress yourself more efficiently.
MAJOR TIP #1: SEARCH FOR LENGTH
To prevent a lot of disappointment in the shopping process, I personally recommend to just look at the lengths of clothing as you walk through the aisles. This mindset saves me a lot of time because it helps me weed out the clothing that won’t work for me as a hijabi.
BEST DRESS SILHOUETTES FOR HIJABIS
A LINE DRESS
Essentially, an A line dress is a dress that goes outward like the shape of the letter “A”. This works great in a modest hijabi’s wardrobe because it doesn’t cling to your bum. You can easily find this type of silhouette at any trendy women’s fashion store these days. (Ex. Forever 21, Express, Charlotte Russe, Primark, etc.)
DROP WAIST DRESS
The drop waist dress is quite similar to the A line dress except for the fact that as the name suggests, the waist is dropped. The drop waist dress starts out with a more boxy cut and goes outwards at the hip, which makes this roomy silhouette perfect for hijabis.
SHEATH DRESS
The sheath dress is a great option for modest shoppers because it is a boxy dress that is cut straight down. This is a favorite silhouette among those who have minimalist tastes.
SHIRT DRESS / BUTTON UP DRESS
I personally love button up dresses because they have that utilitarian look that is so chic these days. A lot of them are created to be flowy and a little oversized, which makes them popular and easy to wear. You can spot this type of dress in any career store or trendy fashion store as well.
KAFTAN / MAXI DRESS
Ethnic maxi dresses are PERFECT for occasion wear and also great to wear around the house as well if you can find the simple ones. They are often floor length, roomy, and embellished in the collar/chest region so you can easily wear these to events. If you are on the lookout for this type of clothing, make sure to visit any ethnic boutiques in your area.
