HOW TO USE HIJAB PINS: A CLOSE UP TUTORIAL
WORD OF CAUTION: Please, please, please don’t ever put a pin in your mouth while wrapping the scarf. SO many girls do it and I just cringe at what could possibly happen :'( .
Asalamualaikum! In today’s post I’m going to share some tips and an in depth tutorial on how to use hijab pins for your headscarf style. If you would like a more detailed discussion on the different types of hijab pins make sure to visit this post: THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF HIJAB PINS
Unfortunately I had to learn this information the hard way and have made a few holes in my scarves. I want to share this information with all the hijabi girls in the world so we can #savethescarves .
WHICH TYPES OF SCARVES SHOULD BE USED WITH HIJAB PINS?
Any scarf that is woven tightly will work well with hijab pins. In the video I mention that pashminas and silk polyester scarves are great examples of hijabs that will work perfectly. If your scarf frays easily and is loosely woven, the pins will cause gaps in the fibers and ruin your scarf.
HOW TO TEST IF YOUR HIJAB PINS WILL RUIN YOUR SCARF:
If you are unsure as to whether or not the pins will ruin your scarf you can do a simple test. In order to do this, take a straight pin and poke it through the scarf. Ideally, it is best to test it in one of the corners so that if you do create a gap it shouldn’t matter so much. Next, while the pin is poking through the scarf, move the pin in a circular motion to see whether or not the fibers are moving around. If the fibers stay in place, then you know that the scarf will work well with pins. If they move, however, then you now have the knowledge that pins will create holes in your hijab. In this case I would recommend using magnetic hijab pins, instead.
HOW TO USE THE STRAIGHT PIN
Straight pins are great for what I like to call “perfect placement”. This is because you can use them during the hijab wrapping process to pin down the scarf according to your angle and draping preference.
To use the straight pin, drape the scarf around your head as desired and pin throughout the process as many times as you need to. Take the pin and slide it downwards, making sure to go through all of the fabric layers to make it secure. Next, angle the pin outwards so that it pokes out, and then proceed to go downwards again underneath the layers.
DO NOT poke out the needle towards the end because it could potentially snag on to something or someone. In addition, keep in mind that you should always pin the needle downwards.
HOW TO USE THE SAFETY PIN
Safety pins are amazing for hijabis that move around all day and want to make sure that their scarf stays secure. I personally like to use the pins that have plastic on one side because they are wider and easier to hook and unhook.
To use this type of pin, first place the scarf on top of your head. After that, grab both sides of the scarf underneath your neck and unhook the safety pin from its sheath. You will then place the needle of the safety pin through both pieces of fabric under the neck and hook it back into the sheath to secure the scarf. After using the safety pin, you can now wrap your hijab as desired and you won’t have to worry about it coming undone!
